Of the wide variety of species, two are more common in culture. – bauhinia felt and bauhinia purple. The first one came to us from India, and the second from Asia.

Bauhinia felt is a miniature tree with pleasant heart-shaped leaves of green color with dark green veins. Tree shoots are flexible, with dark bark, during flowering, they sag under the weight of buds.

Sure, the most beautiful bauhinia felt are its flowers, they are bright yellow in color, with a dark spot in the middle. The first flowers appear in spring and are pleasing to the eye, replacing each other, until autumn. Interesting, that each flower lives only a day and before withering changes color to dark lilac.

Bauhinia purpurea usually grows only in the southern regions or indoors, where it is warm and there is always plenty of moisture. Plants of this species are also small trees., having a spherical crown and dropping almost to the ground under the weight of leaves and flowers.

The leaves are also heart-shaped, painted, but, in a more saturated green color, sometimes even with a bluish tint, they reach a respectable length of a dozen centimeters. Their already beautiful appearance is even more decorated with flowers, which appear at the end of the year – In November.

Flowers are collected in tassels, and during the flowering period, the tree seems to light up with a purple fire, effectively standing out. The flowers are not even big, they are huge, each about 10 cm, consisting of five petals, slightly elongated, painted in a variety of colors, from purple to white.

BAUHINIA: CARE

Sometimes bauhinia is taken out on the balcony for the winter, this is only permissible if, if the temperature does not drop below five degrees below zero – this is the minimum, which the plant can withstand in a dormant period after the end of leaf fall. However, flower growers who especially respect bauhinia try to prevent foliage from dumping, this is considered the height of professionalism. In order for the plant to change its mind about shedding foliage, you need to provide him with enough light, cool air and stop watering.

As soon as spring comes into its own outside the window and the sun begins to impatiently melt the snow, Bauhinia can again be transferred to a warm room. Usually, put it in this case at the south window, but during this period the main thing, so that the tender leaves do not burn the aggressive rays of the sun, therefore, the first few days will need a shade. If the leaves are not shaded, then they may lose some of their color, become faded, chlorotic, but this does not mean at all, that the tree is sick.

An important point in caring for bauhinia is watering. In winter, it should be kept to a minimum.. This is the most dangerous period, and many make a mistake, constantly moisturizing the substrate, which leads to partial or complete death of the root system. Remember: in winter, watering is permissible only after the soil has dried, which cannot be said about the summer period, when plants require more abundant watering; however, it is also important to monitor the ground: if it's wet, then you can't water.

As for the potted soil, then it must certainly be drained, as well as air- and moisture permeable. At the bottom of the dishes, you need to arrange drainage and pay more attention to the leaves.. If they suddenly started to turn yellow, then there is a lot of water and watering should be stopped.

About the third year after planting, the bauhinia can be fed, by adding nitrogen fertilizers in a minimum amount in the spring and phosphorus-potassium fertilizers in the fall. Sanitary pruning can be performed from the same age.

Bauhinia borrowed its name from the surname of botanists from Switzerland, who discovered this plant at the end of the 16th century. Interesting, that bauhinia leaves consist of two lobes, they are inseparable, like brothers, who discovered it.

The genus Bauhinia includes more than two hundred species, they are all deciduous or semi-evergreen vines, shrubs or small trees. Despite the fact that bauhinia is called the orchid tree, it has nothing to do with the orchid and belongs to the Caesalpinium family.
