Begonia was first discovered in nature and was described in detail by French researchers back in the 16th century., it was discovered in the Antilles, a modest bush it seems, became popular in an instant. Soon a new species of plant was found in the south of India., they called this species "royal begonia" because of the large size of the leaf blade, having a silvery brown color. A little later, tuberous begonias were also discovered., and then the species sprinkled like a cornucopia – bolivian begonia, Veitch begonia, Pierce begonia.

Centuries have passed, and now science knows about a hundred wonderful species of begonias, and thanks to breeding work, more than a thousand hybrid forms were obtained, species, varieties of begonias – without exaggeration for any color, taste and smell. Begonia has become one of the most popular plants, grown at home and outdoors.

But wherever begonia grows, she can always cheer up, calm down, relieve nervous tension and even purify the air in an apartment or house, get rid of the annoying smell of new furniture or the unusual "aroma" of repair.

In good hands, begonia will live long, will bloom gorgeous and delight the eye with fresh green leaves.

Right after you brought the flower home, try to create a humid climate around it – humidify the air, put wet peat at the base of the dish, and put small stones on the bottom of the pot.

BEGONIA – LANDING AND CARE AT HOME. FLOWER TIPS

KEEPING THE OUTFIT OF THE ROYAL'S RUNNING (BEGONIA REX)

Royal begonias (Begonia rex), like other "guests" from the tropics, in winter you need more attention and care. Moreover, all the charm of a plant in amazingly painted foliage, which I try to keep, so that the flower meets the spring beautifully.

LIGHT AND HEAT

I protect the "queen" from the direct sun. And in the shade, the leaves turn pale. And if in the summer the plant flaunts on the west window, then in the fall I rearrange it to the south. I put the pot on a pallet with wet sphagnum moss or expanded clay and - on a foam "pillow". I maintain the temperature at this time within + 14-16 degrees. I do not allow drafts.

WATERING

I soak the soil a couple of centimeters every 10-12 days. I don't spray bushes. I wipe the leaf blades from damp dust, then with a dry sponge. With high humidity and sudden changes in temperature, the plant can be affected by powdery mildew., and at overflow, poor drainage, leading to stagnant water, - root rot.

FEEDING

In winter I feed begonia once a month with Novofert fertilizer (0,5 st.l.. on 2 l) or "Ficus" (1,5 cap on 1 l of water), pre-spilling the soil with clean warm water. With the arrival of spring, I increase the feeding to 1 once a week. Fertilizer "Vermistim" works well. Into solution (I cook according to the instructions) add a little infusion of birch ash and water: 0,5 l mixture per plant.

When the vigorous growth of begonia begins - it's time to form a little bush. On high 7-9 see pinching the top.

Beauties of begonias rightfully take their rightful place in home collections. Spectacular fireworks of blooming species leave no one indifferent. What conditions of maintenance and care are needed for plants in the warm season? Today we will find the answer together with a biologist, collector Natalia SEMENOVA.

BEGONIA ELATIOR

Pleases with flowers not only in winter, able to bloom at any time of the year, if you provide it with intense lighting and do a short period of short days (lighting less 13 hours) to stimulate the formation of flower buds.

If your pet bloomed in the winter, let her rest now. Remove the peduncle, shorten shoots that are too long, cut the cuttings for rooting if necessary. Apical shoots with a length of 5-7 cm. Remove the bottom sheet, dry the cut a little and, powdering it with "Kornevin-nom", plant the cutting in slightly damp peat soil with perlite. Put in a greenhouse. Optimum temperature - +20 city., daylight hours - about 16 hours. Root cuttings of tuberous begonias in the same way..

BEGONIA ETERNAL FLOWERING

This is how the people call the ever-flowering begonia. Its indisputable advantages are unpretentiousness., long flowering from spring to autumn frosts, decorativeness in any weather, disease and pest resistance. The beauty is grown mainly as an annual in the open field.. In the house, it retains decorativeness for several years and blooms almost all year round..

BEGONIA FROM SEEDS, CHERENKOV AND LEAVES

Ever-flowering begonia can be grown from seeds, but later, to keep the variety, only stem or leaf cuttings are used for propagation.

If you sow (superficially) seeds in January-February, then you definitely need additional lighting. At a temperature +20-24 city, seedlings will appear in 2-3 weeks. Accustom the seedlings to room air gradually. Later 12-20 weeks (depending on the variety) begonias bloom. Plant them outside after the threat of return frosts..

Stem cuttings are cut from mature plants in spring or summer. Rooted in loose soil - peat and perlite (1:1) or put in water first. Use a greenhouse and root stimulants. This way you can save your favorite variety..

Growing from a leaf is a longer way.

If in summer potted begonia stands in the open air, bring her into the house before the autumn cold snaps, which can cause fungal diseases. And be sure to treat pests.

BEGONIA – FARM OF VITAMINS

Leaves B. ever-flowering rich in vitamins, especially ascorbic acid. They taste good, in Western countries they are added to salads.

With hypovitaminosis

In the spring, eat 1 st.l.. chopped fresh leaves 1 -2 once a day before meals or add them to salads. But don't get carried away, since greens, except for vitamin C, contains oxalic acid.

Treatment with leaves is contraindicated in renal- and urolithiasis with oxalate stones, gout.

CLUBBIES DECORATE SUMMER

Plant tubers in pots in spring, only when the eyes hatch on the concave upper part, otherwise they can rot. First, sprinkle the nodules with a thin layer of substrate and keep it slightly damp.. After the start of active growth of shoots, add more 2-3 cm of soil - this stimulates the development of the root system. Room temperature for germination - not lower +16 city.

CONDITIONS

Lighting Morning sun or bright ambient light during the day
Temperature Poor heat tolerance. Need frost protection
Watering After the top layer of soil has dried, not hitting the leaves
Top dressing During the period of active growth (stop one month before the end of the growing season) - weekly complex fertilizer in a half dose

ROOTING THE CUTTINGS OF BEGONIA

At the end of summer, you can cut stem cuttings from adult begonias. Keep rooted plants in the house until spring. When growing beauties from a leaf in the first year in a young specimen, all the forces go to the formation of a tuber, active growth begins in the second season.

A friend gave me a cutting of ampelous begonia Belleconia Chardonnay in autumn. Sprinkling the cut with activated charcoal, to avoid decay, put him in a glass (100 r) in purchased soil with perlite and covered with a package.

Kept under a lamp. He took root for a long time, about a month.
When new leaves appeared, passed into the pot 0,5 l. All winter the plant stood on a rack next to other flowers.. At the end of February, I transplanted it into a container 3,7 l and transferred to the greenhouse.
For the substrate mixed leaf humus, purchased peat (1:1) and some perlite. added 1 st.l.. flower granular fertilizer OMU, mix well with soil. I water minimally, as the topsoil dries up - I'm afraid to pour. Begonia does not like the scorching sun, so I hung the pots there, where the rays "look" before lunch. A month after planting, she began to gradually feed the beauty with potassium sulfate - for lush and long flowering.

    1. If the tubers overwintered in the ground, move the pots from a cool place to a light windowsill (mid to late February). Content temperature - + 18-20 degrees. Water after the top layer of soil has dried., avoiding stagnant moisture. When the sprouts appear, transplant begonias into fresh, nutrient-rich soil.
The timing of the awakening of tubers, wintered without substrate, will depend on, where do you plan to grow them?: if on the balcony, in the loggia or on the site next to the house - mid-late February, на даче — середина марта, тогда кустики не разрастутся до окончания весенних заморозков и перенесут дорогу без проблем.
      БУДИМ КЛУБНИ
Чтобы хранившиеся без почвы в прохладном месте (подвале, refrigerator) nodules have sprouted, place them, hollow side up, on a slightly damp, thin layer of sawdust (peat, sphagnum, fabrics) at the bottom of a shallow container. Put in warm (+22-24 city.) shaded place, не накрывая. По мере просыхания осторожно увлажняйте «постельку», не попадая на клубни.
Высадите их в горшки со свежим грунтом, когда ростки достигнут 0, 5-1 cm, и поставьте на светлый подоконник.
