GIBISKUS: COMPACT "COLOR"?

Hibiscus bought many years ago was immediately compact. And as soon as the effect of the growth retardants has ended, the bush began to develop actively and turned into a large, constantly flowering tree.

Flowers with apricot color and crimson strokes in the center are kept in dissolution of everything 1-2 days, but even without them, the plant attracts with dark green glossy leaves.

Last spring, I planted a handsome man in open ground, I didn't take it to the house for the winter (the flower then died out). Before planting, I cut off the stalk and rooted in peat, in a greenhouse. When he grew up a little, transplanted into a pot and pinched over the third bud for better tillering.

Hibiscus needs sunlight, so my pet is standing on the south windowsill. I water regularly, preventing the soil from drying out, otherwise leaf fall will begin. I feed with universal fertilizer. The plant is afraid of drafts, so I keep it away from the window.

By nature, hibiscus is a tall shrub. For growing in the house, bred medium – and slow-growing varieties. Your pet, Ludmila, belongs to the Double series (medium-sized hybrids). I support the compactness of my copies of this series by annual cardinal pruning.

I want to tell, what happened this year with my hibiscus (bush of three cuttings, planted in one pot).

For several years, the Dutchman regularly bloomed, to 15 cm in diameter, yellow flowers, and almost never ceasing, and in winter, and in summer. This spring, the long-awaited bud appeared on the grown third branch. When he opened up, the two lower petals were bright yellow, and the top three are bright pink. The flower lasted in dissolution, like the rest, about three days, because it was hot (in the cool-to 6 days). A few weeks later, the next bud opened on the same branch - with pink petals.

The next one - they are half pink and yellow with a clear border between the colors. What to expect next? Can, experts will advise, how to explain this miracle?

Hibiscus behaves like a chimera, composed of two types of cells. The phenomenon is quite common in the plant kingdom., better known to collectors for examples with variegated leaves.

It can be assumed, that the variety with yellow flowers was obtained from a specimen with pink petals by somatic mutation, when a yellow flower bloomed on a pink hibiscus. This mutation was selected and propagated, put into production, got a new yellow variety. But there is always the possibility of a return to the mother, when, among the mass of cells with new external manifestations, a part with original signs appears. Or when selecting material for reproduction along with mutated

my cells were taken from the original. If there are many, then comes the restoration of the qualities of the mother plant, in this case, a return to pink flowers; if not much, then they appear mosaic: on some flowers or even on individual petals or parts of them.

In the future, flowering will depend on, how these two groups of cells will interact. maybe, that one will completely replace the other, and all the petals will become monochromatic, pink or yellow. But there is a possibility, that the chimera will persist, and every flower will be the same surprise. maybe, that when such a hibiscus branches out on different shoots, there will be flowers of different color.
