FLOWER CYMBIDIUM – GROWING

Cymbidium stands out among orchids for its undemanding disposition and is quite suitable for growing even for beginners..

MAINTENANCE AND CARE

In summer, the plant is comfortable outside, but I put it under a canopy, to protect from precipitation and the scorching sun. Temperature difference between night and day, especially in August, promotes the formation of flower buds.

I pour with settled warm water. The frequency depends on the weather - the cooler, the less often, and vice versa. You need a "golden mean" and it is important not to fill.

I feed with fertilizers for orchids ("The Merry Flower Girl", Bona Forte, Pokon) at half the recommended dose - with every third watering.

Orchid overwinters in the house, in a cool, bright place.

SUBSTRATE FOR CYMBIDIUM

Orchid soil can be used commercially, the main thing, so that it contains bark, charcoal and some high peat. I prepare the soil mixture myself: 4 parts of the bark, 0, 5 parts of charcoal and the same amount of perlite (or GrowPlant substrate, absorbing excess fluid, and then giving back to the roots), I mix about a handful of dolomite flour (on 5-7 l).

3 METHODS FOR PREPARING BARK FOR CYMBIDIUM

  1. I boil it several times, draining after each water.
  2. In the winter I freeze, then I cut them into pieces of the desired fraction and process them with broad-spectrum fungicides.
  3. I divide the pruner into the desired pieces, I remove areas with resin, I soak for a couple of hours in a solution of fungicide and insectoacaricide (according to instructions).

LANDING OF THE CYMBIDIUM

I pre-soak the pseudobulbs on 2-3 hours in the fungicide ("Fitolavin", Vitaros, "Score") with the addition of insecticide and acaricide. Then I dry in the sun. I put a large bark on the bottom of a tall opaque flowerpot, then middle, I fall asleep roots with medium and smaller. I don't bury pseudobulbs, to avoid decay. I take the pot proportionate - it should remain to the edge 2-3 cm. I cover the surface with sphagnum moss. It does not allow the soil to dry out quickly, possesses bactericidal properties, retains salts.

CONDITIONS FOR THE CYMBIDIUM

My newcomer cymbidium has formed peduncles and is about to please with flowering. Waiting for this moment and at the same time worrying, that I can not provide favorable conditions for the orchid in winter and preserve fragrant flowers.

It seems, you have conditions that are quite suitable for cymbidium, if the plant is going to bloom. In the future, it is important to follow the basic rules of its content..

  1. Winter temperature - about + 15 city.
  2. Need intense diffused light and timely moderate watering.
  3. Spray the plant with soft warm water. Artificial lighting is desirable.

FOR FLOWERS

Arrange daily temperature drops. In the summer, it is better to take the orchid outdoors. (balcony, terrace, garden with lace tree shadow), preventing the soil from drying out in the heat and protecting it from bad weather. Bring it into the room until the autumn frosts, by making sanitary pruning of leaves and treating pests. It is better to feed with special fertilizers for orchids., not exceeding concentration, during the period of active growth.

MODERN ORCHID HYBRIDS can bloom (depending on the variety) not only in the winter-spring period, but also at any time of the year.

CARE AFTER FLOWERING

Cymbidium is transplanted no more often, than once every three years, usually in spring. For strong roots, you need a pot in the form of a tall vase. Should be avoided as being too tight, and spacious containers. The substrate must be loose, but nutritious enough. for example, fern root mixture, peat or sphagnum, leaf land, pine bark and coal (3:3:2:1:1). Either such: fine crushed stone or pieces of pumice, pine bark, sphagnum, light compost or leafy soil (all components are proportional).

The plant is propagated mainly by dividing the bush during transplantation, when more 15-20 large pseudobulbs (not less 5 in every share). Sections are treated with an antiseptic (eg, chlorine hexidine) and sprinkled with activated carbon.

  1. Cymbidium got into my collection by accident - I saw a discounted copy on sale without an exact name and decided to buy. Previously, I did not deal with these orchids, just heard, what many of them love
    cool content.

The large bush that I got was clearly cramped in the pot, so I decided to immediately load the new settler into a larger container. I chose fine fraction orcheate as a substrate. Kept cymbidium in a house on the south side in the summer, in half-shadows. Watered along the edge of the pot and into the pallet. Did not feed, since the plant was dormant for a long time. The orchid has grown stronger over the summer, "Drank" the pseudobulbs. In the fall, he took her out to an open gazebo, where she stood until the frost, near 2 months. When predicting a decrease in topics
below 0 city, immediately took the plant into the house and put it on the northwest window in the coolest (+18-20 city.) angle. Autumn extreme obviously went to the benefit of the cymbidium: he released 2 peduncle, which quickly gained strength and decorated the New Year holidays with bright flowering. Unfortunately, the flowers were completely odorless… And in my collection there are such "comrades", usually, do not stay long. I am looking for a fragrant alternative!

    1. Most cymbidiums, on sale, are hybrids and cultivars (most commonly called Cymbidium Mix). Only a florist can identify them, who has been engaged in this orchid all his life and has a labeled collection.
